Tips for making your own labels
- Do them on the computer
- Putting the text in a table in Word works just fine
- If you want color but don't have a color printer, just print outlines an color with markers
- Laminate the labels
- or just tape over the label, not as pretty but definitely works
- Make sure they are easy to remove, and reattach
Where I use my labels
- Kitchen
- Fridge and pantry
- Toy boxes
How I did my labels
First I took notes on which labels I want. There are some things in the kitchen which I have regularly but not always so I reuse the same jar and need to have more labels than I have jars. Last time I did new labels I just taped them on to the side of the jars. I did not like that system, as I couldn't I was stuck with the label that was on each jar. Another problem was when I needed to wash the jars, the tape weren't as waterproof as I had hoped. So this time around the labels are laminated, and hang on a piece of twine so I can remove them easily.
Having labels that can be removed will make it easier to clean and switch contents.
After deciding which labels I need I designed the labels on my computer, considering what size I wanted for the label it self, the font and how thick to make the outline etc. I made sure to test one sheet out before I was finished to make sure it looked the way I wanted I to.I also tried laminating 2 on their own, as I just bought the laminator and wanted to se how it worked and how I would attach the twine.
I cut out the little hole in the corner, since I don't think to plastic will stay sealed if I cut a hole in the paper. I weren't very accurate when cutting out the hole since the way I wanted it the knot would cover the edges. Around the outer edges of the label I left a bit of space so the plastic wouldn't split.
I use clear glass jars in my pantry, they come in different sizes but on the 3 bigger one the size of the lids is the same. So I'll just attach the twine there, and use the same size on my labels. The tiny jars needed their own size on the labels, or the labels would be bigger than the jars.
For my daughters room I used the same labels as the bigger jars in the kitchen. I just made sure to use a shorter piece of twine, since they wouldn't be tied on in the same way. But I like the idea of having matching labels through out our home.
I'm really happy with the result, it looks a lot better than the taped on ones I had before. But the best part for me is that it won't be a hassle any more to wash the jars, or to change labels if I change the content. In the picture to the left you can see a jar with the old taped on label as we as how one of the new ones look.
